Katie Boston-Leary Presentation Spotlight
Katie Boston-Leary, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, of the American Nurses Association, and Quint Studer, Healthcare Plus Solutions Group and author of The Calling, joined forces on March 20th, at the ACHE 2023 Healthcare Leadership Congress to lay out an actionable plan to help organizations consistently replenish their workforce and create a delivery of care model that benefits both patients and nurses.
The speakers reviewed the components of the severe nurse staffing crisis, including stress, trauma, burnout and other mental health issues that are rampant in the workforce. They emphasized that It is urgent to aggressively tackle this issue, and a big part of the solution is creating a culture that puts the well-being of nurses and other staff front and center.
Ms. Boston-Leary, a member of HLNDV, and a participant in The Partners for Nurse Staffing, a think-tank collaboration between HFMA, AACN, ANA, AONL and IHI, created a snapshot of where nurses are today in terms of well-being, and stated that:
“There are six crucial priority areas that the think tank identified as needing urgent action. These include developing healthy work environments; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); work schedule flexibility; the stress injury continuum; innovative care delivery models; and total compensation.”
Studer zeroed in on the importance of creating a human capital ecosystem that puts fully engaged caregivers at the center. He provided a wealth of tools and tactics that replenish nurses’ emotional bank accounts and build strong relationships between leaders and staff.
